My iPhone is my new diary. I love the idea of a diary. I don’t know how many diaries I started as a kid and I never finished. They all started hopefully… with the intention I would write about my life. The first few pages would be filled with my newest crush, my bratty sister and all makings of that teenage angst. Then the diary entries would be less and less filled until it consisted of blank pages. I wasn’t a writer and never had the patience to sit and write. I was too busy swooning over a boy!

A few years back did my 365 project. I took a picture a day for a year and I really never stopped. I seem to take a picture every day still. One – I am a photographer and I can’t help but take pictures, Two – I have my iPhone with me all the time (as it seems most of the world around me does!).   I realized that this diary is something I can keep up. Not because I had to, but because I wanted to.  I record my life through pictures not words. I look back at all my little images and it brings me back to locations, emotions and people in my life. For me, an image is more powerful than words and a perfect way to preserve my memories.  So…..

Dear iPhone, look what I have been up to.

My little 365|2009 book benefiting First Exposures is being featured at Studio 9. It’s a great little gallery downtown Pleasanton. Studio 9 has some beautiful pieces. They feature local and regional artist.

I am very excited to be there. If your down there going to the farmers market stop by and take a look. Studio 9 is right next store.

Art is not so much expressing oneself, as it is discovering oneself. -Anawanitia

As you may or may not know the proceeds of my book are going to First Exposures!
It is tough growing up these days …well tough growing up period! I know If didn’t have art and photography when I was a teenager I would have been lost. That’s why we need programs like First Exposures!

Unfortunately, So many arts programs are needing funding. You can help by purchase my book !

Here is a little more information about First Exposures:

First Exposures provides a creative outlet for students to express themselves in a safe and supportive environment, and encourages them to become articulate, confident, and responsible young adults. In 2008 First Exposures expanded its program by introducing a digital photography class in order to serve more youth.

Mission:First Exposures is a unique mentoring program that uses art education to develop transferable skills and foster supportive intergenerational relationships between artists and under-served Bay Area youth. Students and mentors meet weekly for a year and work toward a final project, which in the past has included exhibitions, public billboards, and the book First Exposures.

A year ago I came across a website dedicated to the photos of Jamie Livingston. He took a picture a day with a Polaroid camera from March 31, 1979 to October 25, 1997, the day of his death. It was so amazing to me to see this man’s life day by day, year by year. After his death his friends oraganized and posted the pictures for the world to see.

I was so inspired by this I decided to try it. For one year, I would take a picture a day with my iPhone, the camera I knew I would have with me all the time. Sometimes I would be inspried and shoot quite a few images a day, other times I could barely shoot one. I would then process the images on my phone with a app called Camera Bag. This would enhance the color or change it to black and white.

A year later my project is complete. I love what I have accomplished. It’s so fun to look back and remember places I have been or people I was with. I feel truly blessed to be able to create a little bit of art everyday. Everyday art with the places and things I would see everyday.

From the beginning, it was my intention to compile the project’s images into a book. The procceds from the sales of the book will go to San Francisco Bay Area youth and art programs. Please visit my other site for my info.
