If only we could pull out our brain and use only our eyes – Pablo Picasso

I was watching my 3 1/2 year old niece the other day while her parents were taking a night off. When I asked what she wanted to do, she exclaimed, “Paint, Auntie! Paint!” So… we painted. She didn’t care what she painted, if she made a mess, or got a little dirty. She was so excited just to get the colors on the paper (especially red – her favorite). She created picture after picture. They were messy, bright, and they were hers. She would say “I am going to make an elephant.” “Now I am going to make the sky and a rainbow. ” It was so fun to watch and reminded me about “the art of being creative”.

I feel so blessed that I get to create for a living. However, a big part of making art is often being critical of what I am making. I want it to be the best. There is definitely a dialogue between my head and my heart over something I create. That drive feeds me but can also exhaust me at times. Watching Emme paint reminded me that there’s something to be said for sometimes just putting the paintbrush to paper, letting go, and getting out of the way of your own creativity.
